Facebook’s dominance on social media is rarely questioned, however, in terms of breaking news, Twitter is frequently viewed as a superior and better efficient social platform. With the aim of conquering their rivals in this area, Facebook have announced a new mobile application.

Notify appThe new app, appropriately named Notify, sends customised notifications alerts to the users phones lock screen. Users can tailor their notifications and alerts based on personal interests in areas within news, sports and entertainments. It is also possible to receive alerts based on your location.

The push notifications are sent by followed ‘stations’ and only include a snippet of information about the news story. A link within the notification will send the user to the publisher’s mobile webpage, surfaced inside the Notify app. Content can be saved for later reading or conveniently shared through platforms such as Facebook, of course.

So why are Facebook launching this app when people can already access publishers news on the social platform’s News Feed?

Michael Cerda, product director at Facebook commented on the matter “People have different ways of consuming information; search is one way, social is another, and we think that push notifications might be yet another. We see it as an evolving medium and want to be a part of that.”

After dominating people’s phone time the social platform is now looking to rule the nations lock screens.

The app launched in the US on Wednesday (November 11th) and will be available in other countries in the future.
