Google search SEO mistakesWhen you’re trying to improve your SEO, there are plenty of books and websites rife with information to help you get to the top of Google. But because of the obscurity of Google’s algorithms, you may often find that some of this advice is conflicting.

It isn’t possible to ‘test’ ideas out to see what works and what doesn’t. For this reason, many don’t know their mistakes until it’s too late. There are however some common SEO mistakes to be aware of:

Bad backlinks

If you generate paid-for and unnatural links to your website it can have an adverse effect on your ranking. Google knows when you’re trying to manipulate your way to the top and it will punish you for it. When it comes to backlinks, quality is much better than quantity. Work on off-site SEO to get effective backlinks directing to your site.

Keyword overload

Many businesses believe that if they cram their pages and posts with a certain keyword it will increase their ranking. While you do need a keyword, it’s important to not make your writing looking spammy by overloading them with a certain word or phrase. Whatever you write, make it look natural.

Having the same keyword on every website page also has a negative effect. As a general rule, Google only shows one page for a specific keyword in search results. So when there is more than one page, the lesser pages can negatively affect the SEO of the better page.

Mobile friendly site

The importance of non-desktop browsing has long been mentioned. More than ever before, people are browsing websites on their smartphones and tablets. For this reason, Google gives credibility to mobile-friendly sites.

Duplicate content

SEO advisors will all agree that content is key, but many make the mistake of creating content that is short and duplicated. Write unique, opinionated content that will add value to readers. Make sure that you go into detail on your topic, generally, those that rank highly have a higher word count.
