Are you new to networking? Here are some simple networking rules to get your started…

Firstly, if you are going up to a group of strangers, it is easier to join a group with an odd number of participants than an even number. So for example going up to one person standing on their own group or a group of three or five is likely to be more successful than going up to groups of two, four or six.

Secondly, don’t try to sell on the night. By all means engage in conversation and talk about what your business does, but it is far better to ask questions, listen, and then ensure you have the contact details of the other person than to bore them to death telling them everything about your business and trying to close a sale on the spot. It is rude and won’t make you any friends.

Thirdly, remember that with so many people coming and going at these events, it is often difficult to stand out from the crowd. If you’re doing a 6o-second presentation, can you make it visual? If you have something to say to people, can you make it memorable? Is there something about your product or service that you can give them as a sample? As Oscar Wilde said, the only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about. Most people blend into the background, so think of a way you can stand out from the mass.
