With Halloween proliferating British culture in the past twenty years, new research has shown that the millennial generation is the driving factor behind growth in sales of Halloween products.

Inspired by a whole host of ghoulish films and TV series – The Walking Dead, Dracula Untold and Annabelle being just a few from the last couple of months, the UK’s 16-24 year olds are becoming ever more enthusiastic for American-style Halloween celebrations.

Research from Mintel shows that sales of Halloween products will reach £240m this year, with 58% of 16-24 year olds spending money on Halloween in 2013 – a percentage that is set to be even higher this year.

But it’s not only millennials that are getting into the ghostly spirit of things; three quarters of parents with children between six and twelve years of age bought a Halloween related product in 2013, with 40% purchasing trick-or-treat confectionery.

These figures show that Halloween is quick becoming a key date in any company selling to the general public’s calendar, alongside more traditional dates such as Christmas, New Year’s and Bonfire Night. So whether you’re a café looking to boost trade in the winter months or a food supplier with a product that you can put a spooky twist on, try making Halloween a key date in your October marketing plan, and see what macabre customers come your way.
