Peterborough’s annual Frog Racing Championship raises thousands for cancer charity
The annual World Frog Racing Championship, which took place at Peterborough Greyhound Stadium last week (5th July), was the most successful event in the competition’s 16 year history. The race raised over £8,500 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
The championship’s principal organiser Princebuild Limited, worked with a number of local companies to help put on the race. Around 1,200 spectators came along on the evening to cheer on the teams. MCS Interiors from Peterborough were named as this year’s champions after three gruelling rounds and the Mayor of Peterborough presented them with their trophy and £300 prize money.
“The annual frog race has become a firm favourite in Peterborough’s social calendar. It’s always hilarious to take part in but this year was particularly comical,” comments Dale Asplin of Princebuild. “With the unusually fine weather, the atmosphere was fantastic and the crowd really got behind the competitors. We are delighted with the amount raised; it exceeded our expectations and I would like to thank all those who contributed and took part.”
The money was raised through the sponsorship of races and the sale of raffle tickets and programmes. Spectators also placed bets on each heat throughout the evening to help raise funds. Dale adds “Macmillan is a really worthwhile charity, and whilst the event was a great night out, it also raised a phenomenal amount of money for a fantastic cause.”
Macmillan Cancer Support work to help cancer sufferers, carers and their families. The charity, which offers more than healthcare, funds nurses and specialist health workers and builds medical centres as well as funding home improvements. The charity also offers important emotional support and advice on the financial help available to those affected by cancer.
