Have you ever noticed how competing on price sneaks up on you? Nobody decides to do it. A prospect asks for a discount, so you give a little. A competitor undercuts you, so you match them. Before long, price is the main thing customers compare, and you’re in a race nobody really wins.
Here’s what’s going on underneath. Most businesses price by looking inwards. They add up the cost to deliver, glance at the going rate, and settle somewhere in the middle. It feels sensible, but it ignores the one person who decides whether your price is fair: the customer.
Value-based pricing works the other way round. It starts with what your offer is worth to the customer, not what it costs you to produce. Think about the car market. Every car does essentially the same job: it gets you from A to B. Premium brands use better parts, but that barely scratches the surface of the price difference. Most of the extra value is emotional: the status of the badge, the identity it signals, the quiet reassurance it brings. The feeling is doing far more work than the engineering. The same logic applies to your business.
This week’s Ideal Marketing Minute walks through a simple prompt. If a customer could only describe the result you deliver, not the features, what would it be worth to them? Then push a little further: are there emotional elements you could strengthen reassurance, status, belonging, confidence that would make that result feel worth even more? That’s often where real pricing headroom sits. And it’s exactly the job good branding does: translating emotional value into something customers can sense before they’ve even spoken to you.
