Man made rocks solve a weighty problem at Chelsea Flower Show

Man made rocks formed the centrepiece of an award winning exhibit in the Grand Pavilion at last month’s Chelsea Flower Show. The lightweight rocks, which are made from polyethylene, were featured in Birmingham City Council’s ‘Plight of the gorillas’ garden which took silver at the annual show in London.

The Birmingham entry was designed to highlight the threat to gorillas in Rwanda and consisted of a jungle scene complete with a waterfall centrepiece made of the specially manufactured rocks and tropical plants. Originally it was thought that the rocks would have to be brought all the way from Central Africa, before discovering the alternative version, which is made by one of the council’s regular suppliers Amberol who also supply self watering containers, waste bins, benches and other garden products to individuals, councils and private companies.

The Amberol rocks are moulded from original granite specimens and can be ballasted with sand or soil for stability. Not only were the rocks cheaper to buy and transport, but they are so lightweight that constructing the exhibit was also made much easier.

John Williamson, Marketing Manager at Amberol was at Chelsea to view the finished result. “The garden looked really impressive and the general public absolutely loved it,” commented John. “People were coming up to the display and commenting how fantastic it looked – it certainly had the wow factor. We were delighted with effect that the rocks created as part of the waterfall; they looked exactly like real rocks but at a fraction of the cost, making it a real sensory experience for visitors.”

Based in Derbyshire, Amberol is a family run business based in Alfreton. Set up in 1969, has clients across the UK and Europe.  For more information about Amberol and their products, visit www.amberol.co.uk.
