Letters have been disappearing from signs and shop fronts throughout the UK this week as part of a campaign encouraging people to donate blood, the national blood week.
Landmarks, shops, brands and medical centres have removed the letter A, O and B to symbolise the blood groups that are needed to boost supplies in Britain. Downing Street, Waterstones and Green & Black’s, amongst many others, have all lost their As, Os and Bs for the week.
The general public are also being asked to join in, by taking the letters out of their names and social media posts, as well as utilising the hashtag #missingtype.
This comes as it was revealed that the number of new volunteers giving blood in England and North Wales has dropped by 40% in the last ten years. The ‘missing type’ campaign aims to raise awareness of the fact that if any of these blood types disappear, supplies may run critically low.
Whilst the marketing campaign is attention grabbing, it serves to highlight a very real problem, and encourages anyone who can to donate.
