HOW MANY people are connected with your company? It may just be you, or you may have hundreds of people who work in different capacities. You may also have a number of suppliers, from a bank manager to a part-time bookkeeper.
While you may have some people whose specific responsibility is sales and marketing, the truth is that everybody in your organisation or closely linked to it is actually involved in the sales and marketing.
Think how many people we all know. On the business networking site LinkedIn, if you are connected to 500 people, the actual number of connections including third parties is actually likely to be more than four million.
The interesting thing of course is that we are only connected to a fraction of the people we know on LinkedIn. So imagine how many people could potentially hear about your business in a good light if everybody within the organisation and associated people had good things to say about it.
We may take time and effort in explaining to our sales staff the new product ranges and the new advantages of using our products and services, but how much time do we take to educate other people in the organisation? This might not be done on a formal basis, but there is a host of other subtle ways, such as having products on display, running strategically placed information videos, circulating regular customer and internal newsletters, that you can spread the message about what you’re hoping to achieve in the business. Using methods like these, you can educate a great deal of your new extended sales and marketing team who could potentially spread the word about what you do.
So don’t think of your sales force as your only sales team. You never know who is going to come into contact with somebody who knows your organisation and ask questions like ‘What do you do?’ or ‘Who do you work for?’ or ‘Do you know a company that…’ If you’re able to take the time to educate and explain the advantages of what you do to everybody from suppliers to part time staff, you would be surprised how many additional enquiries you may receive over time.
