Have you ever dreamt of stepping onto that iconic red circle to deliver a TEDx talk? It is an incredible journey, and knowing where to begin can feel like the biggest challenge. If you’re considering applying, you’re in the right place. I want to share some essential tips from my own experience to help you navigate the process and get started on the right foot.
Tip 1: Choose the Right Event for You
A common question is, where should you apply? While it can be tempting to aim for any event with open applications, a little strategic thinking goes a long way. Many speakers travel long distances for their talk, but I recommend starting your search close to home. Why local? Attending rehearsals becomes significantly easier, and you get a fantastic opportunity to become a genuine part of the speaker community. I found that local connection to be incredibly valuable. You build relationships not just with the organisers but with fellow speakers, creating a support network that lasts long after the event day. While not every event can offer this deep sense of community, it’s a huge benefit when they do. Before you even start your application, do your homework. Research the event’s past themes and, more importantly, watch some of their previous talks. Does your idea align with the kind of topics they feature? Does the style and production of the event match the talk you envision giving? This initial research can make all the difference in finding the perfect stage for your idea.
Tip 2: Develop Your ‘Idea Worth Sharing’
Next, let’s talk about the most crucial element: your idea. Remember, TEDx is built around the principle of an “idea worth sharing,” not a sales pitch. This is a common pitfall for many professionals and business owners. It would have been easy for me to propose a talk all about marketing, my area of expertise. However, I knew that a niche, industry-specific topic wouldn’t connect with the broad, diverse audience that TEDx attracts and was unlikely to be picked up by my TEDxGosport; it simply wouldn’t have fit with the other talks. Instead, you need to think bigger. What is the universal message at the core of your expertise, one that you can get excited about and that fits with the event’s theme? I chose to speak to the consumer within all of us. Think about the message you want to share with the world, not the product or service you want to promote. That is the key to crafting a powerful and appealing TEDx idea that resonates far beyond the stage. For this part of my journey, I received guidance and a great deal of encouragement from Sarina Mann. Sarina has been my speaker trainer for a while, and she gave me the skills and confidence I needed to believe I could really do this. The right support helps you refine your message until it shines.
Tip 3: Master the Application Process
What does the application itself involve? The truth is, they vary quite a lot. Some organising teams ask for detailed written proposals that break down your idea and structure. Others prefer a video submission where you pitch your concept directly to the camera. The level of detail required can also change dramatically from one event to the next. This is where getting expert help can be a true game-changer. When I was preparing my application, I worked with Sam Warner. Sam has not only delivered her own powerful TEDx talk but has also organised two of her own TEDx events. Her insight into what organisers are truly looking for was invaluable. She helped me understand what evidence I needed to provide to make my application stand out and demonstrate the potential of my idea. Having an expert in your corner can demystify the process and boost your confidence.
What’s Next?
Getting your application accepted is just the first step. The real work begins once you get that exciting confirmation email. In my next post, I’ll be sharing more about my journey, including why I chose my specific topic, “The Hidden Story Behind Why We Buy,” and the detailed process I followed to get my talk ready for the red circle.
