All social media profiles give you a chance to promote your business in the way that you want to be seen – you get to control all of the content, and you can make it as detailed or as vague as you like.  However, many people and businesses forget to keep their profiles fresh and updated as time goes on. This is especially true for Twitter with only 320 million out of the 1.3 billion accounts registered active.

Twitter profile logoHere are a few simple tips and changes you can make to get the most out of your Twitter profile:

Keep your artwork updated

How old is your header? Has your company logo changed? Each tweet you send has your business’ logo attached to it so keeping this and your profile header up to date and in line with your business’ branding is very important. The optimal 2017 dimensions for Twitter artwork are below to help you:

Header:

500px (width) X 421px (height)

Keep in mind that there are visible and non-visible areas. You can find templates online to help you with this.

Profile photo:

400px X 400px

This is the recommended minimum size but as long as it’s square, it can be larger and still fit properly.

As an added branding bonus, you can change the colours of your profile to match your business’ branding. This means that the profile text, action buttons and hashtags will all show in your colours.

Update the ‘about you’ section

Twitter doesn’t give you as much space to talk about yourself on your profile as Facebook and LinkedIn but what space it does give you should be used to its full capacity.

Create an interesting but simple bio about yourself or your company and try to include what you do, where you’re based and any contact details you’d like to be included. Below the bio, you have the option to add in a website URL. This is useful so people don’t have to hunt for your details. If you don’t have a website, include the link to your other company social media pages or personal LinkedIn profile instead.

Use hashtags

Using relevant hashtags is important when getting your profile noticed and the amount of hashtags you use matters too. Too many hashtags can put people off and look like spam but not using any will limit the amount of people your tweets reach.

We’d recommend using only 1-2 hashtags and to choose them carefully to make sure that they match the content of your tweet.

Tweet at the best time

There’s always an optimal time to do something, tweeting included. Depending on your industry and whether you’re B2C or B2B, the optimal time to tweet could vary – the best way to find out is to experiment and take a look at what your competitors are doing on a regular basis.

Below are what we’ve found to be some of the best times to tweet:

Weekdays (Monday – Friday)

  • 12pm – 3pm
  • 5pm
  • Early mornings (7.30am – 9am) if your audience is likely to be on Twitter during the morning commute

Weekends

  • 10am – 2pm

Tweet regularly

There are no hard and fast rules about how often you should update your Twitter feed. A feed that hasn’t been updated in months is the social media equivalent of tumbleweed, however tweeting constantly can be just as off putting. Being realistic is the key to success – research shows  that most retweets happen an hour after a tweet, however there’s no point in making grand plans to tweet five times a day if your schedule only allows for five a week. Planning is crucial – fewer interesting and engaging tweets will be far more valuable to your brand than a constant barrage of repetitive or uninteresting content.

Be spontaneous

A social media schedule is all well and good, but if something exciting happens that you want to share with your followers, don’t forget to tweet it! After all, people respond best of all to authentic content. And remember to positively engage with your customers – likes, retweets and sharing relevant industry news will go along way towards establishing you as a valued expert in what you do.
