One of the best ways to get your employees on board is to sit down and explain to them what your plans are for the business and ask them for their opinions and ultimately for their buy-in. Taking them through the process step by step, explaining what you’re hoping to do with the company over the longer term, the different markets you are aiming for, why it’s so important to retain customers, what plans you have to win new customers etc. Too many staff feel they’re being treated like mushrooms – kept in the dark and covered in manure.

If you think about it, it is only logical that your staff will respond positively to your plans for the business. They want to make sure that their employment is secure and that they are working for a company with a good future. If you feel confident that they can see the big vision for the company for which they work and – just as importantly – feel that they can significantly contribute towards the outcome, they are far more likely to be engaged on a day-to-day basis. We all enjoy having meaning to our work.

The chances are you have a strong vision for your business and you have a passion to make that business grow. If you do, share it with your staff and explain to them what you’re trying to achieve with their help. If you get them on board, the journey will be a lot better for all of you. If you have staff all working for different reasons and pulling in different directions, it’s very difficult to move forward.
